SCREW THE LITTLE BIRDIES

BIRDIES | EVENTS

It's spring and the birds and bees are doing there thing out here on the west coast. We even had the wonder of nature on our very own front porch. Some little birdies made a nest on top of one of the porch lights and it wasn't long before cute little heads were seen poking out.

We checked on them daily, showed them off to whom ever happened by, took pictures and other parental chores. Needless to say, when Kathy noticed one of them had fallen out of the nest, I was there standing on a barstool putting it back in. Well, the damn thing didn't want back in and everytime I attempted to put him back, out he flew!

Then a couple of siblings decided they wanted out too, and now we had three cute little birdies on the ground and out of the nest. During all this time, the mother bird was putting up a fuss in a nearby tree. Thinking that the mother could do a better job than us, we backed off with Kathy, Matt and Sean staying to watch Mother Nature. Myself being bored, headed back inside to my office.

Did you know Blue Jays eat baby birds? We sure found out. As soon as we backed off, we figured out why the mother bird was putting up a fuss. A Blue Jay swooped down and got himself some dinner. Kathy came and got me and I made another round of attempts to put the two survivors back in the nest. Stupid birds wanted to be a meal I guess because they kept jumping out of the nest each time I put them back in. So I stuck them in a box, sat it on the barstool and this time we all went in to let Mother Nature take care of itself.

Well, Kathy couldn't stand it two minutes and out she went to check on the little darlings. The boys were out back skate boarding and I was in the office geeking. Sometime later as I was lost in thought, a moaning sound interrupted me and in the office doorway was Kathy on the ground writhing in pain!

Standing on the barstool, she had attempted to put one of the birds back in the nest, it flew out startling her, the chair swiveled and you can guess the rest. I guess she laid there for quite awhile before deciding to crawl inside where I finally heard her! 5 and 1/2 hours in the emergency room, a broken left elbow and right foot. Now she has 6 weeks laying around thinking about those cute little birdies!
