STANDING L-R, BILL, JACK, HAZEL. SITTING L-R, GEORGE, PEARL AND MARY.

Grandpa was a grocer and an outdoorsman by profession. He made a living in both capacities. In the outdoors catagory, he was a fish and game warden, then a sporting goods manager. As a grocer, he managed and then ultimately owned his own grocery stores. While "bringing home the bacon", he still managed to pitch semi-pro baseball against the likes of Satchel Paige and other great players.

His third wife Alice, whom I knew as my Grandma, was a perfect match for his outdoor life style. I have many fond memories of her and their time together. We lost her in 1977. Thinking a little irrationally and probably only remembering the "good times" he remarried my "real grandmother" and probably made another mistake. She still could not cope with everyday life and soon went back to the "comforts" of institutional care. I probably would never have met her if he had not remarried her and brought her to Sacramento, so I thank him for this

Grandpa then married Marian, an old friend of his, and they enjoyed a few years together before we lost her to cancer in 1990. He soon decided to sell his Lake Wildwood home and move to Woodland to be closer to his daughters. There he met his last love Irene, who became his traveling partner on many trips around the states. Oh, did I forget to mention Grandpa loved cars and travel? In the last 15 years, he probably went through 10 new automobiles. Taking off without a care, mainly on forgotton back roads, they loved "discovering" small towns and local eateries.

JACK AND IRENE

It was just last summer that Grandpa was shooting pool here, drinking Heiniken in the kitchen with Kathy and able to take care of himself. And now he's gone too.

I'll miss you Grandpa.
