KATHY'S TURN!

baby

I was born on August 25, 1959 to Donald Thomas Malone and Margaret (Peggy) Elizabeth Dooley in Roseville, CA at Roseville Hospital. They took me home to 6900 Boulder Road in Loomis, CA the 7th child of eight children. We were one of the first houses in the area and actually named the road Boulder instead of Malone as my Father didn't want to seem pretentious. The following is the story of how I got here and will be continuously changing it as I gather more information. Why I'm here started along time ago.

MALONE

My Paternal side, the Malone's came to Canada about the same time period in the early 1800's as my husband's the Ashley's. They came to New Foundland and the Malone's came to New Brunswick. The earliest document I have found is the marriage between my 3rd Great Grandparents Patrick Malone and Catherine Goddard in 1822 living in Sussex, New Brunswick. They continued living in New Brunswick as shown in the 1851 census which also shows Patrick immigrated to Canada in 1818. Patrick passed away in 1864 and 20 years later Catherine did. They had 11 children. Their son Patrick my 2nd Great Grandfather shows up in the 1871 census and he also married a Catherine! They immigrated to the United States in 1880. Their child Thomas, my Great Grandfather, was born in Acadia, Canada before moving to America 2 years later as this PETITION to become an American citizen shows. In 1898 he married my Great Grandmother Mary 0'Niell and by 1900 they are living in Providence, RI and he is a teamster. Ten years later in 1910 the family is living at 120 Rosdale Street in Providence, in a duplex with their next door neighbors being Mary's brother Martin and family. My Grandfather Ed shows up at 9 years old in the census. My husband Mike's Great Grandfather George Murphy, in 1910 was also a teamster just like my Great Grandfather Thomas Malone! Had to be a dying industry with advent of trucks to take the place of teams of horses. My Grandfather Edward married my Grandmother Elizabeth in 1918 and in1920 shows them living in Providence, RI and Ed is in the grocery business. Just like our Great Grandfathers, both my Grandfather Ed Malone and Mike's Grandfather John Murphy both managed Grocery stores! Ed and Elizabeth had 4 children.

They show up on the 1900 census living in the Providence, RI with their first born, Edward. Thomas is listed as a teamster. In 1910 they are living next door with Mary's brother and family and have two more children, Henry and Mary. Unfortunately my Great Grandmother Mary died of tuberculosis in 1913 leaving Thomas with 4 children to raise. One year later, their youngest child Catherine, died at just under 3 years old. Life must of been tough for them as Mary was living in a Catholic Orphanage and by 1920 my Great Grandfather and Great Uncle Henry were boarders in a hotel. At the same time in 1920 my Grandfather Edward was married with his first child and has his mother in law living with them. My Great Grandfather Thomas remarried a Margaret Unknown by the 1930 census and my Great Aunt Mary is living with them. 1940 they are living alone, but Thomas is still working and by 1950 he is retired. Thomas died in 1953 at 78 years old and Margaret died in 1958 at 80 years old.

THIRD GENERATION

Edward Malone 1900 - 1981 and Elizabeth Harvey 1902 - 1998, had 11 children:

HENRY EVERETT 1919-1994 first shows up in the 1920 census. The family lived in company housing by the mill that his Dad worked at. He still lived at home in 1940 and before long he began his studies at Notre Dame. During WW2 he had to register for the draft which shows him as a student there. By 1950

EDWARD (BUD) ABNER 1920-1992 married Ruth Unknown 1924-? and had a son Edward J, born about 1945. Spent most of his career as a bartender.

DONALD THOMAS 1928-1971 married Margaret (Peggy) Dooley 1924-2000 (my Mom and Dad) on August 13, 1949 in Edgewood, Rhode Island. I asked my Uncle Ken Dooley if he knew how my Mom and Dad met and he replied, "I can tell you exactly. Your grandfather Malone had a catering truck that serviced Firesafe where your mother and Eileen worked as welders. They helped build metal pontoons used in troop landings during WWII. Your father and Buddy were the drivers. Don started coming around and the rest was history. By the way, your Uncle Buddy used to give away food to any pretty girl who smiled at him. I remember. Your father complaining to your mother about Buddy". Thank you Uncle Ken for that memory! Anyway my Mom and Dad began dating soon after the war ended and Dad was accepted to Notre Dame. He would return to Rhode Island as much as possible to see my Mom but no promises were made early on. Well Mom loved to dance and flirt but always plutonic and on one of Dad's trips back he pulled up to her house just as she was getting into a car with another man to go dancing. That was enough for Dad, he proposed the very next day and both Mom and Dad moved to South Bend to finish his studies. My Uncle Ken and Uncle Jack also moved out there and worked in the auto industry across the border in Michigan. My oldest Brother Don was born in 1950 and Brother Pat in 1952 shortly before Dad graduated in 1950. Mom had Dad promise her they would move to California after he graduated and move they did to Azuza, CA where Dad got a job with Aerojet. My Dad's parents followed soon after along with my Uncle Jack.

JHOSEPH GERARD 1941-2006 never married. As a young adult was arrested for marijuana possesion and used an insanity defense to get out of it. The State of California used electro shock therapy at that time and unfortunately destroyed Joe's life.

HARVEY

At this time I don't have any information past my Great Great Grandparents on my paternal Grandmother Elisabeth's side. She was born in Rochdale, England in 1901 to my Great Grandparents John and Martha (Jones) Harvey. John was a coal miner at a young age before working in the textile industry as his Father (my Great Great Grandfather) by 1901. The family immigrated to Rhode Island, USA in 1908 which was a big textile manufacturing area. By 1910 they are living in Providence, RI in the same neighborhood as the Malone family. As I type this, we don't know if Ed and Elizabeth met going to the same High School or just living close to each other but they were married in 1918 at 18 and 17 years old respectively. The Malone - Harvey union produced 4 children.

DOOLEY

Now we can address my maternal side first with the Dooley's, which is my Mother's Father's side. We start with my 3rd Great Grandparents in the marriage of Patrick Dooley and Ann Phillips in Manchester, England 1826. They never made it to the States and we can see Patrick died in 1849 in Manchester and widowed Ann still living there in 1851. I suspect Patrick was the proprietor of a boot store and lived above the store with his family. When he passed Ann is listed in the census as a boot manufactuer with her son Thomas and 2 employees as shoemakers and even had a servant! Seven of her kids including my 2nd Great Grandfather James lived with her in 1851. I am working on what happened in the next 19 years but I found him in the 1870 census living in Providence, RI with my Great Grandfather showing 7 years old. I have some discrepancies on his birth date and where he was born but as I said this will be an ever changing story as I get more facts. What we know for sure is that my Great Grandfather James Dooley who was a stonemason, married my Great Grandmother Elizabeth Hand and had 8 children. My maternal Grandfather Leo being one of them. On March 3rd, 1919 Leo married my Grandmother Marion in Cranston, RI. They were married by Marion's Uncle John Sullivan. Like his parents, Leo and Marion also had 8 children.

Dooley and Kenneally DOOLEY/KENNEALLY

KENNEALLY

Last but not least we have my Mother's Mother's side the Kenneally's. In January 22, 1817 my 3rd Great Grandfather John Kenneally married my 3rd Great Grandmother Nora Sullivan in Killarney, Kerry, Ireland. It looks like they never immigrated to the States and neither did with their son John JR. my second Great Grandfather. John JR. married Jane Wall in 1853. It was their son William, my Great Grandfather that we got our start in America. The Dooley - Kenneally union produced 8 children.
